8: Letting Go (with Sue Lachman)

Sue Lachman shares how she learned to LET GO after hitting a very low, frazzled, and overwhelmed point in her life. Sue challenges us to “Get curious about where you think your feelings are coming from at the moment. See if they’re coming from this very moment, from the past, or something in the future and see where that takes you.”

Nuggets of Wisdom in this Episode:

  • “The ego collapses when insight occurs.” -Keith Blevins
  • “I thought I had to take everyone else’s problems on my back. I became very burdened and low. I really wasn’t looking after myself, so I was snapping and shouting at everyone in my family and wanting to be out of the house as much as I could. It was not a very good time for me. I was literally on my knees, not knowing what to do, but wanting to get out of it.”
  • “I felt as if I was almost in a bubble. I felt like nothing could touch me and that everything was OK. I kept looking over my shoulder to see where Sue Lachman was. Because this Sue Lachman wasn’t shouting and screaming and panicking that the school bus was going to come any moment and the children weren’t ready.”
  • “This is experiential. It’s logic and wisdom together. It’s not like learning something in a classroom. It has to impact you and touch your soul deep inside. When that happens, a shift is created within you and then you change.”
  • “Our thoughts and our feelings are one and the same. Unless thought is included in the present, then we’re living in either the past, the future, or the ego.”
  • “Living a vibrant happy life is a matter of being OK even when I’m not OK.”
  • “It’s getting really curious and interested and seeing the health in us, that we are not broken, that there’s nothing to fix, and that we are completely healthy and well.”
  • “You cannot look after anyone else or anything else unless you look after yourself first.”
  • “It’s not the circumstance that’s changing things. It’s your thinking about what’s going on that changes, your perception of how it is.”
  • “There is a higher intelligence that knows how to run the world better than I do certainly. When you let go and realize, ‘There’s nothing for me to do because I’m not in charge here,’ there’s that freedom and a lessening of a burden that comes.”

Some of Sue's Favorite Things:

  • Personal habit: None. Sue chooses to live in the moment and not rely on habits.
  • Easy meal: Vegan Black Bean Burgers
  • Possession: “I just love everything in my house. And anything I don’t find exciting anymore isn’t in my house.”
  • Book: Exquisite Mind by Terry Rubenstein (mom of 6 boys who overcame severe depression with the 3 principles)
  • Bucket list item: “Nothing. I take life every day as it comes, in the moment.”
  • Best advice received: “To let go. To let go of being so into myself, into my ego, just to let go of all my problems.”
  • Happiest memory: “Having my children. But, even better, being a grandmother.”

Sue's Happiness Formula:

“Live life at the moment. Know your thoughts come into your head completely neutrally without any power. We give power to every thought. We have a choice whether we take thought seriously or not.”

A Challenge from Sue:

“Get curious about where you think your feelings are coming from in the moment. See if they’re coming from this very moment, from the past, or something in the future, and see where that takes you.”
