Growing up in a rural village in Zimbabwe, Tererai Trent had 4 children by the time she was 18. However, she had a sacred dream to go to the U.S. and earn a Ph.D., an idea which many said was impossible. In this episode, Tererai shares her story of clinging to her dream until it became reality, and the steps each of us can follow to awaken our own sacred dreams.

Nuggets of Wisdom from Tererai:

“See yourself of the creator of your own destiny, knowing that you have the power to shape your future and achieve your dreams.” – Tererai Trent’s mother.

“My mother has always been my compass and moral guide. She helped me to believe in myself before I could know what I was doing in this life. She guided me. I wanted a better life for myself.”

“My mother said, ‘Tererai, If you believe in these dreams, and you achieve these dreams, not only are you defining who you are as a woman. But you are defining every life that comes from your womb in generations to come.' My mother also said, ‘Write down your dreams and bury them and wherever you go, whatever happens, despite the abuse in your life, those buried dreams will always remind you.' She said, ‘All these dreams are your personal dreams. But always remember that your dreams will have greater meaning when they are tied to the betterment of your community.'”

“The silence of women is everywhere. Up until women themselves step up and say, ‘Yes! This is it.' It takes the power of our conviction with others who’ve rallied behind me. Many people helped me and stood behind me and really helped me to stand on my own and to realize this is my awakening. I think it is one of the reasons why I wanted to write this book to say that the silence of women is everywhere, but when women are given the opportunities and women get the support that they deserve, women can excel. Women can heal not only themselves but also the world.”

A Challenge from Tererai:

Read The Awakened Woman: Remembering and Reigniting Our Sacred Dreams.
“An awakened woman or an awakened sister is one who finds joy. It is the one who feels celebrated when another woman rises to power.””
